Poor Mondays. Most people hate Mondays only because it means the weekend is over and we have to return to the grind. But not me. Within the past year, Mondays have started to not suck as much thanks to podcasts. Tuning into these six as I read my emails and sip on my morning tea puts me back in the work mindset I need to get the engine running.
2 Guys and a Girl
2 Guys and a Girl consists of Internet personalities JWilliams, Jade, and X.D. providing comedic relief and perspective surrounding important news stories from the previous week. I genuinely love the F*d Up Song of the Week segment, where they read the lyrics of a really messed up song and dissect how horrible it is.
Have you ever wondered how tall Jake Gyllenhaal really is? No? Well, someone did and due to many ambiguities on the web and within movies, he wanted to figure this out. That’s where podcast host Starlee Kine comes in. Kine takes on a mystery a week—whether that’s tracking down someone with an “I LOVE 911” license plate or figuring out what happened to the video shop that disappeared—and explains what really went down. This show is a rabbit hole in your ear. Seriously.
Buzzfeed’s Internet Explorer
Buzzfeed writers and now podcast hosts Ryan and Katie reveal information about the oddest things that roam the Internet. Before this show, I thought I was pretty abreast of random memes and groups of the web, but no. I’m not. You aren’t either. But if you listen to Internet Explorer, you might not be so far off.
Neck of the Woods
Freshalina, known from defunct entertainment blog Crunk and Disorderly, and her mentee and homeboy SirRatchettness get together (whenever they can) to provide at least two hours of podcast gold. I particularly love this show because they really don’t care about appearances which makes for a more authentic experience. It’s like listening to your two cousins you only get to see at barbecues and funerals talk about the hasbeens of pop culture and whatever else rises in their spirits.
Last Name Basis
Listening to Internet personality Franchesca Ramsey (aka Chescaleigh) and her husband Patrick talk about relevant news topics reminds me of conversations I have with my beau. Their dynamic is lovely and humorous which makes for a great time.
Hosts PJ and Alex also discuss people and events from the Internet, just in a more polished manner than Internet Explorer. Which is all good. The Internet is an interesting platform where a lot can happen. Like, there is a guy that works as a programmer but due to a previous stint as a hacker, he is no longer allowed to use the Internet. Go figure. Oh, and there is life after being a cam girl. IKR? Reply All takes pride in “stories about how people shape the internet” and how “the internet shapes people.”
